A full name makes it easier to match your profile with an email signature, company website or event introduction. Here is the difference between an initial and the professional name someone already knows.

Your connections always see your full name. LinkedIn says that people can still find you using your first and last name when you choose an initial. Read LinkedIn’s last name visibility guidance.

Choose a name display that fits your work.
Use the professional name people already know
Match the name in your profile with your email signature, company bio and other professional profiles. Keep your company and role in the headline, rather than adding them to the name field. Make your headline clear.
Choose the full name or an initial deliberately
For roles that involve meeting new customers or partners, showing your full professional name can help people recognize you. If you prefer an initial, keep that choice. LinkedIn offers the last name visibility setting when your public profile is turned off; it affects people who are not your connections.
Turning off your public profile also limits visibility outside LinkedIn. If you want a public professional presence, review that decision before changing your last name display. Review public profile visibility.
Premium option: let people message you with Open Profile
If you have Premium and want people outside your network to contact you, Open Profile lets other LinkedIn members message you for free. This is a contact option, not the setting that controls your last name.
Find employee profiles that show an initial.
Create your company report in Linkwiz and include your employees’ LinkedIn profiles. Across its 19 checks, Full Name asks whether each person’s full name is visible and searchable.

Use the result to start a conversation with the employee, then share the name visibility instructions. A deliberate privacy choice should stay theirs. The report shows the visible name; it does not inspect their private account settings.

Where to review your name and last name visibility
On desktop
To edit the name itself, open your profile and edit the intro. To review last name display when your public profile is off, open Settings & Privacy, Visibility, then Last name visibility. Select the full last name or an initial.
In the mobile app
Edit the profile intro to change your name. For last name display when your public profile is off, open Settings, Visibility, then Last name visibility and choose the display you prefer.
Connections always see your full name. Last name display is separate from profile viewing privacy and Premium Open Profile messaging.
