How to optimize

The languages section is one of the most overlooked parts of the profile, but it can play a powerful role in shaping first impressions.

If you're reading this guide, you understand English.
That means English should appear on your profile — even if it's obvious to you.

This is especially important if:

  • You're from a non native English speaking country
  • Your name or background might create uncertainty for recruiters
  • You work internationally
  • You want to be considered for global roles or clients

Adding languages removes ambiguity and increases trust.

The native language can explain your background, while mentioning the level of English tells your network not to be afraid to speak with you

List all languages you speak, even if you're not fluent

LinkedIn lets you specify your proficiency across four levels:

  • Elementary proficiency
  • Limited working proficiency
  • Professional working proficiency
  • Full professional or native proficiency

This means you do not need to be perfect in a language to include it.

Use the Duolingo score

If you're using Duolingo, or it is specifically important for you to show the level of the language you mention - LinkedIn has an integration with Doulingo that allow you to add the score to your profile

You can add the Doulingo score from the Add language screen
